If you or your loved one just suffered from a stroke, stroke support groups can help to re-enable you to rise above your limitations. Social interaction and simply connecting with others can help tremendously as it helps ease the depression and isolation that are common after stroke. There are stroke support groups across Malaysia, and they play a crucial role in stroke rehabilitation and recovery.

Members in stroke support groups usually provide assistance to one another for a specific purpose, and may include the sharing of personal experiences, support, provision of information and care, and establishing social interaction.

National Stroke Association of Malaysia (NASAM)

A prominent support group in Malaysia is NASAM which does not only provide rehab services to enable recovery for stroke survivors, it also promotes the concept of stroke prevention by raising public awareness on the risk of stroke. Founded in 1996, NASAM now operates 9 rehabilitation centres across Malaysia.

NASAM has centres in Petaling Jaya, Ampang, Penang, Ipoh, Malacca, Johor Bharu, Kuantan, Kulim and Kota Kinabalu.

Kiwanis Club

Kiwanis Club provides services to maximize recovery for individuals with stroke, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s Disease, prevent complications, and assist the survivor towards independence with confidence and dignity. With improved physical independence, the survivor can participate fully in family, social, and vocational pursuits.

Internet Support Groups

Do mobility or time restrictions make it hard for you to attend a group? There’s always something for everyone and internet support groups are appealing for many reasons. As many prefer to stay anonymous, internet support groups allow anonymity which tends to increase the confidence in many survivors to stay active in the group. Participation in the group is also not dependent on time constraints.
