Akmar, a 25-year-old student, has previously obtained a Diploma in Physiotherapy, but due to her burning desire to improve the lives of others, she has opted to pursue a degree in Nursing at UniKL while working with on the side for experience.
Akmar is a highly active person who participates in a variety of sports on a daily basis, which keeps her physically fit and energized for her job as a caregiver with .
What motivates you to study while working as a part timer with as a penjaga?
Staying motivated as a student while working as a caregiver can be tough. In addition to the fact that I have to work long hours after classes, being a caregiver is a challenging job in and of itself.
I couldn’t do it without the support of my family, who have served as my backbone and pillar of strength. All of my strength comes from my family, who supports me in every decision I make, as well as my determination to treat all individuals who are ill in order for them to be healthy enough to go about their everyday lives without physical health concerns.
Aside from that, I take up locum jobs with to accommodate my schedule and availability.
At the end of the day, I get a sense of accomplishment from making people’s days brighter and easier.

Have you encountered any challenges or experienced burnout while studying and working at the same time? How do you manage them?
I have experienced hardships in managing my dual roles and of course the concern about not being able to excel in my education arises.There are times when I faced burnout while working and studying but luckily for me, offers high flexible working schedules.
To avoid burnout, I plan my time carefully as a way to achieve a balance between work and education. I’ll go for visits with when I don’t have as many lessons in the day and on weekends, and I’ll save my nights for revision. I create a relaxing environment for myself, write my lesson notes, then watch the video footage again.
Being in the healthcare industry, it requires the caregiver to be present physically, mentally and even emotionally in the process of caring for the patient. How do you make sure you always keep your health status in check so that you’re always ready to offer your care?
For caregivers, learning to provide care for patients is an ongoing process. Even after many hours of training, caregiving is a fluid process in which things are always changing and adapting. Different clients may require different care. To deliver the best care possible, I’ll always make sure to understand the care requirements and all of the case reports before the visit so I’m prepared for what’s to come.
I would avoid myself from being stressed and keep myself physically, mentally and emotionally fit in order to care for others. For example, I’ll make it a point to work out or practise yoga at least twice a week. Physical activity, in my opinion, is the finest approach to relieve stress!
As we celebrate World Heath Day and also Ramadan this month, do you have any powerful practical tip for caregivers out there on how to take care of their mental and physical health while caring for others?
As a caregiver, we are more likely to experience symptoms of depression or anxiety. In addition, we may not get enough sleep or physical activity, or eat a balanced diet — which increases our risk of medical problems, such as heart disease and diabetes.
To better manage caregiver stress, I generally learn and practice stress-reduction practices like meditation, prayer, and yoga, which help to relax my mind. Regardless of my hectic schedule, I would always make time for my personal healthcare, rest, and nourishment in the form of a nutritious diet.
Exercising improves my sleep, decreases tension, and boosts my energy and alertness. As a result, I would exercise on a regular basis, even if only for 10 minutes at a time. I would also take time off to spend time with my friends and loved ones.
Lastly, what is the difference or impact you wish to make to the families who you care for in ?
I want the families I care for at to be aware of their health status and that they can always reach out for help from qualified caregivers and nurses to assist in improving their health status and overall quality of living.
