About Abiraamyi

Abiraamyi, also known as Abi, is a Nurse Assistant at a Critical Care Unit (CCU) Department. Abi sought to be a veterinarian but needed to discontinue her studies since her mom fell sick, in order to really focus on her until she recuperated. As things improved, she was put to the test again when her romantic relationship imploded. This was the point at which her career as a Nurse Assistant began since she learned that she couldn’t let the relationship breakdown get the best of her, so she began once again and chose a calling in medical care. Even after everything, she felt like she still had so much to give in her, so her friend referred her to join as a caregiver and here she is, almost a year in!

“No matter how hard you believe your life is, there will always be a silver lining!”

Failure only means another lesson to make her wiser. This is what keeps her going!

When is the exact moment that you started ‘falling in love’ with your profession?

I didn’t know I wanted to join the medical line. I was 24 when I was offered to study to be the Assistant Nurse after my biggest turnover in life. From there I worked so hard to excel at my job and profession to prove that I am not a failure. I didn’t realize I would spend the rest of my life taking care of other people, but I fell in love with the hands-on work, and eventually earned my certificate and became an Assistant Nurse.

When I started joining , I fell in love more with my job because of the opportunity to build my working schedule around my personal schedule – perks that provides. I would schedule my visits earlier in the day so I could spend the afternoon with myself or vice versa, depending on my shift.

My Care Recipients are also always very welcoming and nice to me. They have consistently given me good ratings for my visits, which has propelled me to improve.

How has working with shaped your professional or personal journey as a penjaga profesional?

Being a caregiver isn’t easy, something I understand after caring for my own mother and my Care Recipients in . I know what the families I’m helping are going through. It means a lot to me to know that they’re okay and that my help means even more to them.

The support that I got from has also helped me to improve a lot. I appreciate the team for always trying their best to guide me in my penjaga Journey.

What is your biggest struggle when caring for seniors, or what do you think it will be, and how do you, or would you overcome that?

Due to physical and mental deterioration, the elderlies often face a loss of independence, instability in their social life, inability to manage things on their own, and becoming slightly more reliant on those around them. In such circumstances, caregivers are under pressure to adapt and adjust their role as a caregiver to meet the basic needs of the senior.

Whether you become a caregiver gradually or all of sudden due to a crisis, or whether you are a caregiver willingly or by default, many emotions surface when you take on the job of caregiving. Some of these feelings happen right away and some don’t surface until you have been caregiving for awhile.

Oftentimes there is no one to assist you when caring for the elderly. I have to perform most of the transferring from bed to wheelchair and observation by myself. I’ll always attempt to utilize the body mechanics that I learned while studying to ensure that I only deliver the best to my patients.

Whatever your situation, it is important to remember that you, too, are important. All of your emotions, good and bad, about caregiving are not only allowed, but valid and important.

How do you connect with patients and offer emotional support?

Starting a conversation, listening to patients and understanding their personal values assisted me in providing emotional support. In other words, I show emotional support for others by offering genuine encouragement, reassurance, and compassion. This might include things like verbal expressions of sympathy or physical gestures of affection.

At times, patients tend to overshare something close to home. I’ll let them and proceed to comfort them and support them. Their stories are very touching to the point that it would make me cry but I would keep it in so that I could continue listening to them.

What are your proudest achievements professionally and personally?

My most proud moments as a caregiver is knowing the family appreciates my help & kindness when leaving me with their elderly. I love interacting with the elderlies & mostly caring for them when a family entrusts you & takes the time out to let you know you’re doing a great job. That’s a moment of pride. Aside from that, the families I’ve cared for have always used the advice and practices I’ve given them, which makes me feel amazing and valued. I’m delighted I could be of assistance in making my patients feel healthier.

Never underestimate the impact you have on others. You’re not going to get an award, and you may not even receive any acknowledgment for what you do or what you sacrifice. But always remember: you are making a difference in someone’s life every day. That’s what life is all about.
